What a Shaft Actually Does to Your Face-to-Path Number

Flex, weight, torque, and material don't just change how a shaft feels — they change the timing of when your face returns to square relative to your path. Here's what each one is really doing.

Flex

A Timing Tool, Not a Fixed Standard

Flex labels aren't standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play noticeably differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. Flex is better understood as a description of when a shaft unloads relative to your downswing tempo, which directly affects where your face points at the moment of impact.

A shaft too flexible for your tempo can let the face rotate past square early, closing it relative to your path; too stiff, and the face can stay open longer than your path is ready for.

Material

Steel vs. Graphite vs. Multi-Material

Steel

Heavier and more consistent shaft to shaft, which tends to produce a more repeatable face-to-path number for players with faster, more aggressive tempos.

Graphite

Lighter weight adds swing speed for players who benefit from it, though a lighter shaft can also widen face-to-path variance if timing isn't consistent swing to swing.

Multi-Material

Blends a steel tip section with a graphite body, aiming for the feel benefits of graphite with the timing consistency closer to steel.

Torque & Weight

The Numbers Behind Face Return Timing

Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load — lower torque generally keeps the face more stable through impact for faster, more aggressive swings, while higher torque can add feel and a softer release for smoother tempos.

Shaft weight interacts with flex more than most golfers realize: a lighter shaft in the same flex rating tends to release earlier, while a heavier shaft in the same flex holds the face open longer into the hitting zone.
