A Timing Tool, Not a Fixed Standard
Flex labels aren't standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play noticeably differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. Flex is better understood as a description of when a shaft unloads relative to your downswing tempo, which directly affects where your face points at the moment of impact.
A shaft too flexible for your tempo can let the face rotate past square early, closing it relative to your path; too stiff, and the face can stay open longer than your path is ready for.
