Face-to-Path Ratio Explained

Two numbers, read separately, tell you almost everything about why a shot started where it did and curved the way it curved.

Most golfers have heard the phrase "open face" or "closed face" and assumed it referred to where the clubface pointed relative to the target. That's only half the picture. The face-to-path ratio compares your face angle not to the target line, but to the actual direction your clubhead traveled through impact — your swing path. That relationship, not either number alone, is what determines how much a shot curves.

Two Lines, Not One

Picture two separate lines at the moment of contact: one showing which way the face was pointed, the other showing which way the club was moving. If those two lines match exactly, the ball starts on line and holds its line, whether or not either one is aimed at the target. If they diverge, the ball starts in one direction and curves toward the other — the size of that divergence roughly predicts how much curve you'll see.

Why Ball Flight Laws Changed the Conversation

Older fitting models treated the swing path as the dominant factor in starting direction, with face angle mostly influencing curve. Modern launch monitor data flipped that understanding: face angle actually accounts for the large majority of a shot's starting direction, while the face-to-path gap accounts for the curve. That distinction matters, because it changes where a fitter looks first when something's going wrong.

Face angle decides where the ball starts. The gap between face and path decides how far it curves from there.

Reading Your Own Ratio

A face-to-path gap under about two degrees generally reads as a workable fade or draw — a shape many better players build their whole bag around intentionally. A gap past four or five degrees usually shows up as a slice or hook that's difficult to play with confidently, especially under pressure. We log this gap on every swing during a session, not just an average, because the size of the swing-to-swing variance often matters as much as the average reading itself.

Why We Measure It Directly

Some launch monitors infer curvature from spin axis alone, which is a downstream effect of the face-to-path relationship rather than the cause of it. Our dual-camera bay captures face angle and path independently at the moment of impact, so we're diagnosing the actual mechanical cause instead of working backward from the result.
