Closed Face, Open Path Explained

Most fitting conversations focus on the slice pattern. This is the opposite combination — less common, and often more confusing to diagnose without a real readout.

A closed face paired with an out-to-in path sounds like it should produce a big miss, but the two tendencies can partially cancel each other out at the moment of contact, producing a shot that starts roughly on line and curves only a little — while both individual numbers are actually well off from neutral. It's a combination that hides itself from the eye and shows up clearly on a readout.

How the Cancellation Works

A closed face alone would send the ball starting left of target. An out-to-in path alone would tend to add left-curving spin. Combine a closed face with an out-to-in path in the right proportion, and the ball can start closer to the target line than either number alone would suggest, because the two effects are working against each other in a specific way rather than compounding.

Why This Combination Frustrates Golfers

Because the ball flight can look reasonably normal — a slightly pulled, slightly curving shot — golfers with this pattern often don't realize both numbers are meaningfully off from square. The shot "looks fine" until conditions change: a different lie, a mis-hit, or extra swing speed under pressure, and suddenly the miss gets much bigger because the two numbers stopped canceling out as neatly.

A shot that looks acceptable on a calm range session can hide a real face-to-path issue that only shows up when tempo, lie, or nerves change the balance.

How We Catch It on the Bay

Because we log face angle and path independently rather than just the resulting shot shape, this pattern is visible immediately — even on swings where the final ball flight looks unremarkable. It's one of the clearer arguments for measuring both numbers directly instead of inferring them from where the ball ended up.

What Usually Fixes It

Because both numbers are already meaningfully off from neutral, this pattern often responds well to equipment changes — adjusting face angle at address through the hosel, or a loft change that shifts how visible the underlying path shows up in the resulting flight — rather than requiring an immediate swing overhaul.

A shot that "looks fine" isn't the same as a face-to-path number that's actually square. This combination is exactly why we read both numbers separately on every swing instead of judging a session by ball flight alone.
