Face Angle and Path, Read Separately
No club exposes a face-to-path gap faster than the driver — the ball is in the air long enough for even a small mismatch to become real yardage lost off-line. Our dual-camera bay isolates face angle and swing path as two distinct numbers rather than a blended shot-shape guess, logged with your current driver and every demo head we test. From there we map whether the gap is consistent swing to swing or widens under faster tempo, and adjust face angle, loft, shaft weight and grip size accordingly.
Same Method, Different Delivery Angle
A fairway wood asks for a shallower angle of attack and the ball is often on the ground instead of a tee, which can shift your face-to-path number on its own. We compare your driver reading against your fairway wood reading first — a gap that widens with the shallower club usually points to timing, not a swing flaw, and a different lie angle or shaft weight can close it back up. Sole width and camber matter too, since a sole that catches turf too early can twist the face open right before impact.
More Forgiveness, Same Underlying Number
Long irons are the least forgiving clubs in most bags for a wide face-to-path number — a hybrid's lower, deeper center of gravity doesn't fix the gap, it just makes the miss shorter and straighter while you work on it. We measure your face-to-path number on both the long iron it's replacing and the hybrid candidate side by side, so the crossover point is based on your actual dispersion rather than a rule of thumb about which number iron to stop at.
Lie Angle First, Then the Rest
A sole that reads toe-up at impact is effectively closing your face; toe-down opens it. Either one distorts your true face-to-path number before we've even started comparing shafts or heads, so a dynamic lie board check — under real swing speed, not just static at address — comes before anything else in an iron fitting. Once lie is correct, length, shaft profile and set gapping all get checked against the same face-to-path reading.
Matched to How You Actually Play, Not a Loft Chart
Bounce and grind decisions depend on attack angle and turf firmness more than skill level. A steep attack angle on firm Bermuda fairways calls for different bounce than the same swing on softer overseeded winter turf, and we test both scenarios when conditions allow. We also track your face-to-path number on shorter, more delicate swings, since a gap that's barely noticeable on a full driver swing can open up wider on a half-speed pitch shot.
Matched Instead of Guessed
The face-to-path relationship matters on the green too, just at a smaller scale. We measure your stroke arc — straight-back-straight-through, slight arc, or strong arc — on our putting-green capture strip, then match face balance and toe hang to that arc instead of assuming a face-balanced mallet or a toe-hang blade works for everyone. Length and lie get checked from your actual posture, since setup changes how consistently your face returns square to your path.
